Parenting Education and Support
The Parenting Network offers a variety of parenting classes and groups at locations throughout Milwaukee County. Registration is required for all classes, some of which are free and some of which are offered for a fee. Please call the Parent Helpline at 414/671-0566 to register for a class or to learn more about our services. You may also email Parent Helpline staff. The class schedule is updated quarterly.
Awareness to Action Milwaukee offers a free 2.5 hour child sexual abuse prevention workshop for adults. The Parenting Network is offering a Stewards of Children workshop on Wednesday, May 30 from 1:00 to 3:30 pm at The Parenting Network. Becoming a Love and Logic Parent is a nationally-recognized, evidence-based curriculum that helps parents learn how to hold their children accountable for their actions in a positive and respectful manner. Parents learn to lock in empathy, love, and understanding as children learn about the consequences of their actions. Contact Christy Barden at 414/671-5575 for more information. Circle of Parents programs are structured support groups led by trained facilitators. Groups include Raising the Spirited Child, Grandparents Parenting Again, and parenting groups that are based at transitional living programs and other community sites. A five-week educational series for grandparents is usually offered in the spring.
Cooperative Co-Parenting is a three-hour class that meets the requirements for divorcing parents in Milwaukee County. This class is offered twice monthly and costs $45 per person. Individual sessions are also available for a fee. View the class dates for April through December 2012. (fee-for-service program)
Dad Matters 24/7 is an ongoing parenting series specifically for dads. It looks at parenting from the male point of view and focuses on the importance of dad as a positive role model in his child’s life. A full series is 10 sessions. There is a $30 registration/materials and cerficiate fee for Dad Matters participants. Replacement certificates are available for $10.
Fireworks: An Effective New Approach to Dealing with Anger helps parents gain a better understanding of the emotion of anger. Participants learn to manage anger constructively and how to effectively handle their children’s anger as well as their own. Fireworks will be offered twice more in 2012: June 7 through August 2 and September 6 through November 8. (fee-for-service program)
Grandparents and Other Relatives as Parents is a six-week education and support series beginning April 18 and running through May 23, 5:30-7:30 pm, at Villard Square Grandfamily Housing, 3427 W Villard, Milwaukee. Register through the Parent Helpline at 414/671-0566.
Internet Safety 101 is a new program that teaches parents and adults about the risks that children may encounter on the internet and provides useful tools to effectively protect children when they are online. LifeSkills Transitions prepares 16-20 year olds for the adult world in terms of goal setting, communication, stress management, decision making, time and money management, and relationships. This a FREE program held at The Parenting Network from 5:30-7:00 pm on Tuesdays, beginning on April 24 until May 22. Register through the Parent Helpline at 414/671-0566.
Nurturing Ourselves, Nurturing Our Children is a 12-week series for the whole family to gain better communication, improve behavior, and increase self-confidence resulting in more fun, more trust, and more respect.
Positive Parenting is an ongoing parenting class offered at several locations. Topics include family, communication, self-esteem, routines, stress and anger, discipline, and child development; a full series is 10 sessions. There is a $30 registration/materials and cerficiate fee for Positive Parenting participants. Replacement certificates are available for $10.
Welcome, Baby! is a free, ongoing parenting program that blends information, discussion, and play for expectant and new parents and is offered weekly at several locations throughout Milwaukee County.
